Japan Earthquake Reaction. We can HELP!

Devastating.

But you don't need me to tell you. The news has shown us all. Massive waves, bus-sized cracks in city streets, homes burning, nuclear plants exploding, overturned ships, people sagging against crumbling walls with shaky hands pressed to their mouths in awe of the horror that the 8.9 quake brought on their country. Then the tsunami warnings sounded for countries in and around the Pacific.

When disasters like this happen, I believe they bring the very, very best out in us all. So, I'm asking you to donate to the Red Cross or other relief organization. Give if you can, even if it's a couple dollars. It'll help.

Margot at Confessions of a Mystery Novelist did (is still doing) an incentive for the Christchurch, New Zealand disaster, and it's inspired me. So, here's the deal. I'll do 5 prize packs to motivate you. Not sure what they'll be (definitely a book and something else...yeah, not sure yet).

1. Comment to this post that you're doing something to help. I don't care what it is, and you don't have to tell me. Just post.

2. Spread the word like wildfire. On your blog, your Facebook, your Twitter, wherever. Just tell people.

I'll pick five random posts next Saturday, 3/19/11, for my mystery (even to me) prize packs.

UPDATE! I perused B&N yesterday and came up with the following INCENTIVE PRIZES. Yay! I've either recently read (and loved) these books or come across great reviews for them.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver
You Killed Wesley Payne by Sean Beadoin
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
The Liar Society by Lisa and Laura Roecker
Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Plus, a decadent Endangered Species chocolate bar! UPDATE!

Please, please help if you're able!

Be safe.

Help for New Zealand and Contest Update

This post will be a complete topic-hop. You have been warned! :)

The ginormous earthquake that rocked Christchurch, New Zealand has further devasted an area recently hit by a similar quake. Though the News tries, I just don't think there are words strong enough to convey what those poor families are feeling right now. But there are ways to help, and I recently came across a blog, Confessions of a Mystery Novelist, that is giving an incentive to do just that (though, as the author explains, no one really needs more incentive to help, but it certainly can't hurt). Check it out and give if you're able.

I'm seeing The King's Speech today, so I'll have a review either tonight or tomorrow morning. Remember, the Oscars are tomorrow (Firth, Firth Firth)! Check out this post to predict the winners in a handful of the major categories. I'm hoping to stay awake for at least one of the Actor/Actress categories, but only time will tell.

Contests! Contests! Contests! The FLY TO 500 Contest ends at midnight on Monday, 2/28/11. Can you believe next week is March? Yikes! If you haven't entered yet, check it out here and write your 100 words. Also, I'm giving away a copy of The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson on this post for only two sentences, but that ends TONIGHT (2/26/11).

Okay. That's it! Thanks for reading, be safe, and keep writing!

CHALLENGE! Do You Smell That?

Remember when Dwayne Johnson was a wrestler? Can you SMELL what The Rock is cookin'?

Yeah...that has almost nothing to do with this post. HA!

Here in Ohio, we had temperatures in the fifties last weekend. The sky was clear, the birds were a'chirpin', and the sun shined brighter than the...well, you get the idea. I remember thinking 'I want to smell the sun on this gorgeous day.' Then, someone asked me what I was thinking, and I actually spoke those words out loud.

Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to write up to two sentences describing exactly what the sun smells like to you. I'll pick one winner on Saturday, 2/26/11, from all the posts and mail you a copy of The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. I was inspired by this post and this post to give away this book. No, I didn't win it anywhere, but it sounds great and anxiously waits on my Kindle wish list (maybe for March?).

Here's my description (warning, I had to scrape ice off my car on Tuesday, so I may have forgotten the musical prose tinkering inside my noggin last weekend):

The sun smells like my glass of Brita-filtered water, but sweetened by the perfume of spring, of tulips, hyacinth, and ripe-to-bursting strawberries, all laid out on the prettiest towel on the saltiest beach.

Hmm, smell is tough. :) Give it a shot!

And FLY TO 500 ends soon. Enter here!

=IF(AND(U2="enter contest",B4="March 1"),"WIN BIG","very, very sad")

There are SIX days left in the FLY TO 500 Contest. I'm giving away 25 Amazon gift cards, my lovies, so check it out! :)

The Oscars are upon us. James Franco and Anne Hathaway take the stage this Sunday. Who's gonna win!? I admit, I haven't seen all of the movies, but here's a quick run-down of my picks for the five, main categories.

Best Picture: I've watched 5 of the 10 nominees, so of those, it has to be Inception (I really, REALLY liked The Fighter, though)

Best Actor: Colin Firth. I saw The Social Network, but honestly, I liked Jesse Eisenberg better in Zombieland.

Best Supporting Actor: CHRISTIAN BALE

Best Actress: Natalie Portman. Michelle Williams is great (loved her in Dawson's Creek and Brokeback Mountain, I can't lie), so she would be my second choice.

Best Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo. She takes 'crazy mama' to the next level in The Fighter. Who cares if she posted questionable "campaign" ads. This is about acting, right? Right?!

Who are your choices? Which movie do I need to see like crazy? Take your picks!

Contest Update!

So, the FLY TO 500 Contest is on for the entire month (who wouldn't want a $50 Amazon gift card for 100 words), but I've expanded the rules.

Here is the post.

The contest used to ask for a book or movie review in up to 100 words. I've expanded that to include music/artist or television show reviews as well, still with the word limit.

Check it out, win some Amazon monies, and have fun with it!

Pay it Forward and Unlikely Best Friends

Shelli at Market my Words is having a spectacular Pay it Forward contest. Check it out!

I'm thankful for my mother on a personal, not authorly, level. She doesn't actually know I've written a book, but I'm positive she would tell me it was wonderful no matter what she really thought of it. As a twenty eight year old, I've passed the point where I think I'm always right (the good 'ole days, you know?) and am inching my way toward realizing Mom's the one who's always right. Things I scoffed at five years ago ring true now, and I can't stop my jaw from dropping each time it happens. Does that happen to you?

My mother is a tremendous human being who gives and gives and gives, and I love her with all my heart. Sappy, but so true. :)

I hope everyone's enjoying this weather. Personally, I loved chipping the ice casing off my car this morning. I'd blame Ohio, but I think the entire Midwest, New England, and Great Plains has to take the fall for this one. Be safe in whatever you do.

And oh yeah! Don't forget to enter my first ever (and so exciting!) contest, FLY TO 500! 100 words could win you a $50 Amazon gift card, and every new follower means more money for the EFRC.

And now, something to make you forget this evil winter weather! :)

FLY TO 500! Contest Opens Today!

Goals.

Good to have. Awesome to achieve. Everyone should have at least one goal, no matter how big or small.

I have a goal, and it is huge! Five hundred followers by March 1, 2011, to make friends, learn more about the (crazy) world of publishing, and network, network, network.

FLY TO 500 details:

You must (aka Rules):
1. Follow this blog (by 'follow,' I mean click the Follow button to the right of the screen).
2. Post a 100 (or fewer) word book, movie, TV show, or music/artist review (updated 2/5/11) in a comment to this post. Make me laugh, cry, read, watch, but do it in less than 100 words.
3. Have a valid email address (though you don't have to post it in your comment). Once you see the prizes, you'll understand why this is necessary.
4. Link to this contest on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc., and post that link in your comment. I mean, you should be able to network too, right? Right!

The Prizes!:
1. 20 random number generator-selected comments will receive a $10 Amazon e-gift card. Posts will be numbered in the time/date order they were received, so one entry/comment per person. No do-overs, sorry.
2. 5 Favorites will be selected by me, and the Followers (mwahaha) will vote on the hands-down winner from March 1 to March 10. Top prize is a $50 Amazon e-gift card. The four runners-up will each get a $25 Amazon e-gift card. All prizes will be distributed by March 31, 2011.

Bonus! I'm pledging $1 for each follower to the Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Centerpoint, Indiana up to a maximum $1,000 to be paid over the rest of 2011. Check them out. They're well worth it. Follower count will be taken on March 1, 2011 to determine the donation. :)

I'm also going to visit as many blogs as possible to introduce myself and spread the word.

If you cringe at self-promotion, take a look at Lisa Desrochers's post here. You've heard me talk about her debut Personal Demons, which is very good and you should Kindle the jeepers out of it soon (or buy the book, of course). You've also probably seen Contest City happening across the Blogosphere, so if you promote this contest, I appreciate it and you.

Just for the record, I'm in no way associated with Amazon. I buy my books, movies, you-name-its through Amazon and thought it the most universal for an online contest (plus, you get to choose your own goodies. Neat, huh?).

I am also not affiliated with the EFRC. I just like what the organization's doing and love to support it.

FLY TO 500! Annnnnnnd GO! :)

Contest! Sweettarts ARE involved!

Afternoon, all my loverly followers (mwahaha!).

Holly Dodson has a unique and excellent contest going on at Super Mom Writes to celebrate reaching 100 followers. Check it out.

That reminds me...now, what was I going to tell you...OH YEAH! I have the outrageous notion to reach 500 followers by March 1, 2011. And what better way than a CONTEST! But you'll have to wait until Saturday (yes, I'm moving it up! Can't wait, can't wait!!!).

I know I've been a bit all-caps heavy and the exclamation points are out of control, but I'm sending out my first (ever) query tonight to my #1 agent pick. After that, I'll wait and wait and wait and HOPE that if it's a rejection, she gives me some tips, a sentence, two words, anything really. I'm choosing to be optimistic, of course, and I'll send other queries to other agents who are probably very awesome as well.

I'm also outlining book two, GOT YOUR TONGUE. Why would I outline book two before I know if book one will ever make it off my tiny, silver flash drive? It's simple.

There's more to Kat's story, and I can't wait to see what happens!

Personal Demons Giveaway!

Check out this Fire and Ice giveaway:

http://fireandicephoto.blogspot.com/2010/12/book-review-personal-demons-by-lisa.html

This book sounds very interesting. I read (and thoroughly enjoyed) Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, so if this is similar, I'm sure I'll like it. You know, if high school boys were like the ones in Hush Hush, I would've had a lot more fun. ;)

I decided to start a Twitter account in preparation for the AWESOME contest I'm announcing on January 31, 2011. Seriously, tell your friends. I'm going for 500, my three (3! Hiya Erinn. Love the cougar!) followers! More to come on this.

Free Book Contest!

Who doesn't LOVE free books!?

Check out Coffee. Tea. And Literary's new contest:

http://ncliterary.blogspot.com/2011/01/start-new-year-with-2-fabulous-books.html

Historical fiction held my heart before high school. Harry (more like Draco) stole it after that, but did you read these?

The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Sarah Bishop
The Island of the Blue Dolphins

Okay, I know that last one isn't exactly historical fiction, but it's phenomenal.

Did you like historical fiction when you were younger? How about now?
